What are Lutherans?
Lutherans are Christians, first and foremost. Like every congregation, Faith Lutheran Church has a history. Our history can be traced back to the Reformation in the 16th Century when Christian servants like Martin Luther called to church to be reformed and renewed by the Word of God. More importantly, our history goes back to the New Testament itself when the first Christians responded in faith and obedience to the Lord’s commandment to go and make disciples of all nations.
You won’t find words like Lutheran, Methodist, Presbyterian, Catholic or Baptist in the New Testament in reference to Christian communities. Neither will you find words like Independent, Non-denominational or Inter-denominational. These words are used by people like you and me in reference to specific Christian communities with specific histories and traditions. Every congregation has a history. That history may be only a few months old or it may be hundreds of years. Every congregation has its own traditions and way of doing things. These traditions may be a commitment to and preference for contemporary music or classical music. What matters is that these histories are founded on the Lordship of Jesus Christ and that these traditions honor the truth and power of God’s Word in the Bible.
Here at Faith, we put it this way: We are Christians first and Lutherans second. We don’t believe that our Lutheranism makes us better than other Christians. It is Jesus and only Jesus who saves us from sin and death, not our theology or tradition. Our Lutheran theology is the way in which we talk about our Christian faith with one another and with the world. We believe that there is one Church of which Jesus Christ is the head…and in this one Church are many varieties of local traditions.
With Jesus as the head of the Church, we believe that we have a mission to fulfill. This mission is based on God’s Word in Matthew 28 and it is:
To lead people to Christ,
incorporating them into the life of the church,
and equipping one another for effective Christian living.
You are invited to come and experience the love and lordship of Jesus Christ with us. If you do not have a church home, then you are welcome to come and make yourself at home with us in our walk with Christ. Together we will encourage and equip each other for living as witnesses to the marvelous love of God!
